ABATE kicks off giving season

Motorcyclists made their way across Orleans County on Sunday on a special mission — to deliver presents to Community Action Angels that will help low-income families this holiday season. The 90-minute ride, which ended at the Medina VFW, continues a tradition the Orleans County Chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education has been doing for more than 20 years.

The dozens of riders who took to the streets have been teaming with Community Action for two decades to donate children’s toys and funds that are given to Orleans County families. The gifts aren’t taken for granted. “We’re happy they’ve taken the time to do this every year,” CA Angel Deb Whittier said.

The Community Action Angels are accepting additional donations at the Community Action headquarters in Albion. For the bikers, Sunday was an opportunity to do a good deed and have a good ride on a sunny day. “It was a beautiful day for a nice long run in Orleans County,” said Homer Reitz, a member of the Old Crow Motorcycle Club. “Everybody gets something out of it.” Old Crow MC, Reitz said, has been participating in fundraising runs for more than 30 years.
